Study design: Five adult dogs were recruited and the maxillary alveolar bone from the first incisor to the first premolar was excised.

Material and methods: A cross-sectional study was performed on 66 patients equally divided into the functional appliance (FA) and upper first premolar extraction (UPE) groups.

Molars were frequently extracted followed by maxillary first premolars.

The treatment approach we used is typically indicated for patients with previous extractions of all first premolars who develop significant crowding after treatment.
