Meanings of historicism in English

New historicism allowed critics to flourish their ingenuity by finding repressed meanings that their chosen authors had not themselves acknowledged.

It is not mere fancy-dress historicism, however; the tone is sharp and contemporary and the dialogue often moves on a high level of sophistication.

Austrian philosopher Karl Popper critiqued this notion in his The Poverty of Historicism in 1957.

An Irish version of this ambition is also hardening, though it might be better termed Hysterical Historicism.
