The laser consists of a planar microcavity with a random gain layer.

Here we report electric-field-induced, wavelength-tunable random lasing action in a liquid-crystal infiltrated disordered planar microcavity.

All these phenomena are explained in terms of the coupling of random cavity modes and planar microcavity modes.

Optical confinement by the two-dimensional random cavity and the one-dimensional planar microcavity drastically reduces the number of resonant modes.
