The House also was scheduled to vote on a stopgap bill to keep Agriculture Department programs running until June 6.

Politico quoted McCain as saying he would vote "no" on the stopgap bill if he were in Washington.

After a dramatic standoff with Democrats over immigration policy, Congress approved the stopgap bill to fund the federal government until Feb. 8.

But Mr Trump ignored many advisers by backing away from a stopgap bill without the wall money that would have averted the looming closures.
