There are two species-theDicotyles tajacu and Dicotyles labiatus, or white-lippedpeccary; the latter being the larger and fiercer of the two.

The larger species-thewhite-lippedpeccary-isdreaded by the farmers, as it frequently, in large numbers, attacks their crops, choosing always the most flourishing fields.

The white- lipped peccaries make no effort to escape observation by being either noiseless or motionless; they trust for defence to their gregariousness and truculence.
