The imminent appointment of two Romanian police officers to liaise with gardaí in deporting failed asylum-seekers has been criticised by a prominent Catholic Church group.

Personnel would wear a distinctive uniform and liaise with gardaí, he said, adding that their presence on the streets would deter pickpockets, muggers and addicts.

The organisers of next month's Reclaim The Streets event in Dublin have said they will not be liaising with gardaí.
