The honored antiquity of it is preserved in the anonymous English couplet:

I remember the following couplet in allusion to the King and himself:

The heroic couplet in which it was cast was the standard metre.

And there is all the lifetime of a proverb in the couplet-

The first number in each couplet represented a line on page 186.

So now, with terrible irrelevance, his mind caught at the simple couplet:-

Callimachus wrote the following couplet as an epitaph on the celebrated misanthrope:

So the couplet was frequently read as contrition over an irrecoverable loss.

I heard him quoting on the hilltops of Mudros his haunting couplet:

The last couplet but one was altered in a later copy, thus-

A fifth bullet only succeeded in drawing from him a third couplet.

Our being bathèd in light, as the fine dedicatory couplet has it.
